I live in a 5 story building and want to climb stairs as a way of exercising. any advice on a programme?

rate and frequency, upstairs and downstairs (there is an elevator), how to save my knees (theyre OK so far), special stretches etc.I live in a 5 story building and want to climb stairs as a way of exercising. any advice on a programme?
just climb up the stairs when you need to get home, and climb down them to leave. and when you're tired take the elevator. why do you need a program for that?
