Need advice on building a fish tank in the wall.?

I want to put one in the wall so that it can be seen from both sides, Kitchen and living room. I believe I will have around 5 inches thick ( wall ) and I may go around 2 to 3 feet long and 2 feet high. Also will salt fish be ok in this small amount of water ( Bio environment ) or should I use Fresh water fish. I will install a good under water filter system or another more expensive type in the wall with door for access. I will frame the it to look like a picture. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks advance

I don't know of any fish that would do well in a 5'; wide tank. After subtracting for the thickness of the glass, you're down to about 4-1/4'; inside dimension. To get a decent sized tank in a wall, you basically have to build 2 walls side-by-side, equal to the width of the tank minus the thickness of the finish (drywall or paneling). Frame in an opening on both walls, allowing for 2x4's or 2x6's, depending on the weight of the tank, to be installed on edge (tall dimension up and down). Add a piece of plywood on top, then the tank. As to the type of fish, it depends on what equipment you can fit. We just built one for an office, that was trimmed in cherry paneling and solid cherry trim. We made access doors out of cherry, and matching cabinet doors underneath. It looked really great when it was done, although I'd rather have seen the tank full of lobster than the fish he put in there. Hope this helps.Need advice on building a fish tank in the wall.?
you need to make it out of fiberglass... then measure and cut your area out in the wall you might want lights on top of it...you wont see the lights front outside. seal of the tank with some liquid rubber. paint it and dress it up. make sure there's a opening or sort of hidden trap door so you can easily clean the tank.
